DTE Energy’s Detroit Edison power subsidiary is evaluating burning petroleum coke at its more than 3,000MW Monroe power plant in Michigan, which would replace some of its coal needs. With the nearby Marathon Detroit refinery undergoing an upgrade to process additional heavy crude oils, including installing a new 28,000 b/d coker, there will soon be a large, inelastic supply of petroleum coke in the region that could serve as an alternative fuel for the large plant. Marathon expects the coker will produce about 1,500mt/day and plans to complete the project by the end of the year, possibly as soon as early November.
