摘要

Trees have always been a major feature of the British landscape. Indeed, as the ice melted after the last Ice Age some 7,000-8,000 years ago, trees came to dominate. Forest clearance started slowly as trees were removed using primitive tools (shaped rocks) to assist with small scale crop planting. Without fertilisers, early Neolithic man relied on moving to new areas which in turn resulted in more tree areas being cleared. Tree clearance through human intervention really only started in earnest through the Bronze and Iron Ages, the use of these materials providing for a more effective way of tree felling. By far the greatest loss of trees within the history of our landscape came about during the two World Wars, depleting our woodland resource to around 8% of the total British countryside. Total woodland today through tree planting stands at around 12%.
