Elevator system with variable travelling speed

In the elevator industry there is a strong demand for reducing waiting time and travelling time. However, this demand should preferably be achieved by using the same drive system (i.e. without increasing the power of the drive system). One method is to use an elevator system with variable travelling speed, where the travelling speed is a function of the elevator load (number of passengers). This paper presents a speed profile design function dependent on the car load using a system level approach, investigates the resulting reduction of travelling and waiting time, and discusses the related safety issues.
