Soon after introduction the plant escaped and hasnow spread to many areas of the country. Giant hogweed belongs to the carrot family (known as Apiaceae or Umbelliferae), which has more than 2500 species contained in 275 genera. These include plants native to the UK such as parsnip, carrot, celery, fennel, coriander, dill, parsley and the poisonous hemlocks.
