Achieving true wire-speed processing in cable modem systems

To support widespread market adoption of broadband cable services, the major cable system companies, Multiple System Operators (MSOs), joined together to overcome specific market challenges. A key challenge was to develop a standard method of implementing high-speed data services across the cable industry. A standard technical specification would encourage many manufacturers to develop standard subscriber and headend products. To effect this, the cable industry created its own technical specification called the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). CableLabs, a research and development group for the cable industry, administers the standard and ensures interoperability among vendors and equipment types.
