摘要

Three sub-plinian explosion events preceding lava accumulation at the summit crater and successive vulcanian explosions characterized the eruption at Shinmoe-dake (Kirishima, Japan). Magmatic eruption at Shinmoe-dake, which started in January 2011, occurred after 300 years dormancy. Phreatic explosions took place first in 2008 and often in 2010. Seismic activity around the Kirishima region had increased since 2006 and escalated since 2010. As well, the ground deformation by the GPS measurement suggested inflation of the region in the same time scale. Multi-purposed observational researches were carried out on this eruption. New technology of satellite SAR was very effective to monitor the eruption condition and to issue the alert to the public. Details of the eruption story, magma system under the ground, mechanisms of eruption phenomena and so on have been understood. The information of this eruption is very important for earth scientists in the world to understand how to face to and prepare for eruptions of less-frequent volcanoes with the potential of intermediate-scale of eruptions.
