Crucial to the UK economy are small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and it is relevant to their own profitability and success that they exploit all legitimate and socially acceptable means of cutting their outgoing expenditure, including ways of reducing their lighting costs. Lighting bills in offices and other businesses can be cut by up to 40% through the use of lighting controls, and these don't have to be complex or sophisticated to achieve such savings. Furthermore, a Government funded scheme is available to SMEs which enables the capital and installation costs of putting in lighting controls to be halved. Lightswitch as the scheme is called is operated by the Energy Saving Trust (EST) and is the latest of a number of measures funded by the Trust to encourage the use of energy saving lighting, both in the domestic and non-domestic sectors.
