Experimental methods have been more often used for the development of materials. In recent years, however, virtual prototypes and virtual experimental methods using numerical analysis have become very popular, and have been recognized as a necessary tool to the product development The leadtime for material development can be shortened by applying the virtual experimental methods to material development In this paper, the authors elaborate on the two applications of the virtual experimental methods to the development of an aluminum alloy used for the engine components. One is a method of predicting the material properties of castings, which has been more often used recently, and the other is a method of predicting the low cycle fatigue life of a material subjected to thermo-mechanical loading.
