Irritant-induced enhancement of induction and elicitation of sensitization for the treatment of seborrheic keratoses.

Seborrheic keratoses (SKs) are very common, benign epithelial tumors. Histologically, the basaloid cells in this entity multiply without tendency to differentiation like normal epidermal basal cells, although they possess the potential to become mature squamous cells and to keratinize.1 Biologically, SKs consist of accumulated senescent epidermal cells in Gi arrest of the cell cycle.1 A cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, p 16, is expressed in all cells from this tumor leading to suppression of apoptosis.1 For cosmesis, and sometimes because of functional complaints, these lesions can be removed. Various treatment modalities have been utilized including keratolytics, liquid nitrogen (cryotherapy), electrodesiccation, curettage, laser therapy, and surgical excision.
