At Electrical Review's TTSC (Transformer Technology and Substations Conference) event, Erika Wilson - MD at Wilson Power Soutions - discussed recent developments in the sector. In this follow-up article, Dr Lore Grohmann explains how Super Low Loss Amorphous Transformers have been a key driver for stricter transformer loss legislation. The European Commission estimates around 2.5% of all energy consumed in the EU is wasted through transformer losses. WPS has pioneered super low loss amorphous transformer technology in the UK and developed the UK's most energy efficient distribution transformer, the Wilson e2. Launched in 2009 this super low loss amorphous transformer has helped organisations across a wide range of sectors reduce operating costs and lower emissions with minimal disruption and extremely favourable paybacks on capital investment. Following years of campaigning, the European Union has finally acted on the unnecessary energy wastage through transformer losses with the EU Ecodesign Directive for transformers that will take effect from July 2015 (Tier 1). The directive requires all transformers placed in the market (or being commissioned for the first time) to comply with strict new design specifications that specifically address transformer losses. The Wilson e2 transformer already meets and/or exceeds new design specifications of the first tier (Tier 1) of the Ecodesign Directive for most ratings but is also an extremely cost-effective voltage management solution for sites with MV supply.
