摘要

The sea has always benefited from evocative image, but these days fewer people want to experience it first hand. To an extent this is understandable. Since the late 1960s the size of the UK fleet has steadily diminished and the thrust has been to reduce crews, leading to a marked reduction in opportunities. For some specialists, such as electrical engineers, the trend had been to transfer their responsibilities and remove them from any effective role. Yet things are beginning to change and some companies are now crying out for highly skilled electrical engineers. One body that has highlighted the problem is the Department of Trade and Industry's Foresight programme. The maritime sector panel of Foresight is industry led and is not directly connected to the DTI. Its primary interest is to look at the development of the all-electric ship.
