Excitation Energy Transfer from Ce3+ to Sn2+ in NaCl Phosphor

(Ce3+, Sn2+)-codoped NaCl phosphor was synthesized from an aqueous solution of NaCl-CeCl3-SnCl2. The synthesized NaCl: Ce3+, Sn2+ phosphor was examined using X-ray diffraction analysis, photoluminescence (PL) analysis, PL excitation spectroscopy, and PL decay measurements. The Sn2+ emission band peaking at similar to 530 nm was enhanced about four times compared to that without adding Ce3+ donor ions. The enhanced PL intensity was understood to be due to an energy transfer from Ce3+ to Sn2+ in the NaCl host. The energy transfer efficiency was estimated from the Sn2+ acceptor concentration dependences of the Ce3+ donor emission intensity and average decay time in the NaCl: Ce3+, Sn2+ phosphors.
