Steel sector wants govt to exempt zinc from import duty

Faced by a double wham-my of increasing zinc prices and dropping price realisation for its products, galvanzied steel producers, under the aegis of the Indian Steel Alliance (ISA), has urged the government for a complete exemption of import duty on zinc. While zinc's import duty stands at 10 per cent, along with a two per cent cess, that of the finished steel is five per cent. The steel producers with the help of the ISA, have now approached the Ministries of Commerce, Finance and Steel to exempt zinc from the import duty.
