摘要

Polygonum cuspidatum (Japanese knotweed) was introduced to the US as an ornamental in the late 1800s from Eastern Asia, naturalized in northeastern states by the 1880s and has since spread to most states across the country. Once planted for erosion control purposes, by the 1930s its aggressive growth and difficult management became recognized as a problem. Polygonum cuspidatum spreads rapidly, creates monoculture stands that can out- compete native vegetation (NY Invasive Species Clearinghouse, 2013), interferes with stream access, increases stream bank erosion, reduces site distance along roads, damages the built environment, and causes increased maintenance costs (Child and Wade 2000).
