he image is of water, murky water with boats creeping past the glassy eyes of submerged cars, and sunlight, because part of this sur?real image is the sun-kissed calm of the aftermath. But there's no water in sight at the airport, and few signs of the hurricane's impact. The reality doesn't hit me as I pass downtown, where blue tarps cover some of the hotel roofs visible from the highway, signs that reconstruction is underway. I have to head east to find the devasta?tion, have to drop off the freeway and find myself snaking down a ramp for Elysian Fields, into a hot pink and turquoise neighborhood of ornate shutters and porches built for breezes.
