What the industry is going through now is healthy, albeit painful. Companies can focus on what technologies are best for each play. The hydraulic fracturing and horizontal completion business has been almost too successful for its own good. The advance in pad drilling that resulted in more efficient drilling in fewer days is just one example of why oil and gas production has remained high even with lower oil prices.
