The ultimate goal of much of the software used on a modern drilling unit is to reduce the need for human intervention and, sometimes more importantly, to prevent incorrect interventions that could lead to accidents or downtime. This is achieved through multitiered systems of controllers, servers, networks, and computers. The advanced capabilities include the automation of drilling tools, intricate collision avoidance systems, and intelligent alarm filtering. Along with the vessel's propulsion and power management control systems, these complex systems come together at the time of system integration testing during commissioning. It is here that human intervention of a different nature risks downtime.
