In a Letter, dated 3 August 1910, to his wife, Emily, Edwin Lutyens said this of Julius Drewe's ideas for his new property at Drewsteignton in Devon. If Lutyens were still here today how much more forcefully would he be expressing this wish? What he actually wrote was: 'Only I do wish he didn't want a castle but just a delicious lovable house with plenty of good large rooms in it.' Julius Drewe not only wanted a proper castle but a castle which was to perform all the functions of a great house, so a house (lovable or otherwise) with plenty of good large rooms would have been rather more useful.
