The TCP/IP network protocol has gained wide acceptance as the de facto standard for inter-system data transportation in the manufacturing automation environment. While it was designed to be a fault-tolerant, robust protocol family, TCP/IP is still susceptible to many forms of deliberate and accidental attack which can compromise data integrity and network effectiveness. This paper addresses ways in which the impact of certain common security problems on a manufacturing automation network may be minimized.#1997 Elsevier Science Ltd
