Research on water quality for irrigation in Sicily. Note I: water from reservoirs

Research was conducted on the waters of 16 reservoirs from June 1995-June 1996 in order to define the quality of the water for irrigation. The results show the water to be of low quality, particularly in western Sicily, Italy. The waters from the reservoirs Zafferana, Rubino and Trinita show high values of EC and Na+. In central-southern and eastern Sicily, all the waters examined show high values of EC, Na+ and adjRNa. In these areas, mainly the waters from Gorgo and Furore reservoirs (in the province of Agrigento) and from Don Sturzo reservoir (in the province of Catania) were dangerous for the evolution of soil fertility. Such hazards were linked to the effects of exchangeable sodium on physical features of the soils which were characterized bya clayey montmorillonitic texture.
