With the exception of interpretations of remote or unexplored frontiers, there probably is no task more important in subsurface interpretation than tying a well to seismic data. On the basis of well ties, geoscientists link geology in the depth domain of a well to the seismic response of geology recorded in the time domain. Although depth processing of seismic data has become more and more common to meet the challenges of exploration for and development of hydrocarbon accumulations in increasingly complex and hostile environments, the fundamental relationship between the time and depth domains -- velocity -- remains the critical factor in establishing a well tie with confidence and accuracy. The industry continues to develop advanced tools and techniques that contribute directly to improvements in making well ties, such as broadband seismic acquisition, complex depth imaging algorithms, and sophisticated borehole logging and imaging tools, but at the same time interpreters keep pace by increasing their demands for more and more accurate and detailed characterizations of the subsurface.
