At NKK Fukuyama No.4 sintering plant (effective grate area: 400 m2, annual product: 6.5 million tons), the unmanned operation has been continued since February 1996. To attain the unmanned operation, we have proceeded systematization of sintering operation and automechanization of equipment and devices. Principle systems and equipment installed as part of factory automation include the following: 1) Upgraded computer control system for adjusting water content in the raw materials, chemical composition of the sinter products, and hopper levels, and newly developed system to control the Burn Rising Point (BRP) uniformly in the longitudinal and width direction of the sintering machine. 2) Comprehensive fault system that can automatically generates command to change operation state, judging from the information sent from sensors mounted on individual equipment. 3) Automatic suspension and starting up system that can automatically shut down and shift the facilities to holding mode when an accident occurs, and restart after the restoration. 4) Specially developed enhancing segregation charging system and automatic cleaning devices to constantly maintain the particle size segregation in sintering bed. 5) Automatic the lump-removal device that can prevent from large lumps flowing into charging section.
