Secondary steelmaking developments in British Steel

摘要

The paper examines the reasons for theexceptional growth in secondary steelmaking overrecent years and outlines the features andbenefits of the major secondary steelmakingtechnologies. Development of specific secondarysteelmaking practices, including stirring,degassing, injection, and reheating, to producehigh performance steels for a wide range ofapplications is discussed. The extensive secondarysteelmaking facilities within British Steel arepresented,,, including the high level of capitalexpenditure that has been made in this area.Alternative process routes are compared withrespect to alloy requirements and to the controlof metallurgical specifications demanded by the inservice properties of the steel product. Theconcept of multiple treatments at one processingsite is examined with respect to the design of theprocess route for improved logistical control andscheduling. I&S/1433
