In a recent paper, Suzuki, Kodera, Nakasuji, Ohta, and Syoji showed how control of the feed rate can be used to reduce the figure error produced in axisymmetric grinding of aspheric surfaces. This work parallels a similar result which we also recently published, although the effect of continuous control of the feed rate was demonstrated rather than the incremental changes shown in our earlier work. In analyzing these types of processes we have found it helpful to use a non-dimensional parameter which combines the key process and machine parameters. In this communication we would like to briefly summarize this approach as applied to the grinding of axisymmetrie aspheric surfaces, to illustrate some of its implications in process control, and to make some comparisons with the model developed in reference.
