Genotypic Compatibility in Pearl Millet - Chisterbean Intercropping System in Arid Regions

Intercropping is helpful in increasing and stabilizing crop production in stress-prone, arid regions of Rajasthan (Singh and Joshi 1980, Singh 1995). Intercropping pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) and clusterbean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba) improves and stabilizes the productivity of the system (Bhadoria et al. 1992). With the increasing availability of new cultivars, of both pearl millet and clusterbean, that differ widely in plant type and maturity, considerable scope exists to develop more productive and remunerative pearl millet-clusterbean intercropping systems. Unbranched and erect growing cultivars of clusterbean are likely to be less competitive with pearl millet than branched varieties. Similarly, early-maturing and dwarf pearl millet may compete less with clusterbean than normal cultivars. An experiment was conducted to identify the most suitable combination of pearl millet and clusterbean cultivars for intercropping in the arid regions of Rajasthan.
