The development of molecular markers for use in sorghum breeding programs was initiated 5 years ago at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO). Tropical Agriculture (formerly CSIRO Division of Tropical Crops and Pastures) in collaboration with the Queensland Department of Primary Industries (QDPI). The group has addressed sever al areas of relevance to sorghum breeding, including gaining an increased understanding of the underlying genetic diversity in the Australiansorghum breeding program, to enable future monitoring of changes in levels of genetic diversity in the breeding program, producing a genetic map of sorghum in an Australian sorghum cross, and relating the map to other sorghum and grass maps, identifyingmarkers linked to traits of agronomic importance, and understanding the transfer of genetic material in a pedigree selection program. This review seeks to provide a brief overview of our research in these areas.
