Owners and occupiers of commercial premises have more red tape to battle with in the shape of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The new rules that come into force in October put the onus for fire safety squarely on the shoulders of property owners, occupiers and employers. Up until now, as the owner or occupier, you needed only to obtain a fire certificate. It was simply a matter of implementing the fire precautions identified by the local fire officer; now the focus of the Order is on a continuous self-assessment of risk approach.
