A conference held at the BRE on 30 March focused on micro-generation wind technologies and the role small scale wind generation will play in meeting the energy requirements of our buildings in the future. The potential for wind power is clear. The UK has by far the largest untapped wind power potential of any country in Europe which could be utilised to generate secure, renewable and low-carbon electricity. Micro-generation wind systems utilise small wind turbines, perhaps mounted on the roofs of buildings to generate electricity, energy close to the point of use and thereby avoid the losses, and required infrastructure, associated with connecting to the national grid. This is significant because the national grid, as currently configured, can only effectively utilise a limited proportion of its energy from renewable sources because of the natural variation in the supply of such energy, i.e. the wind doesn't blow all the time.
