Pulp and paper industry weighs bioenergy future, new projects reviewed at TAPPI conference

Rapidly developing technologies could transform the forest products industry with co-production of bioenergy that would lower mill manufacturing costs and provide new revenue streams from transportation fuels and 'green' chemical products, attracting high attendance at the TAPPI International Bioenergy and Bioproducts Conference held Aug. 27-29, in Portland, OR. But the promise of wood biomass will be a complex and challenging undertaking requiring hundreds of millions in capital investment, several presenters noted.
