Tillerson focuses on Mexico reset

US secretary of state Rex Tillerson is patching up a frayed relationship with Mexico, following a spat at the start of President Donald Trump's tenure. But doubt remains over the future terms of US-Mexico trade relations, which will have a direct effect on crude, refined oil products and natural gas. Tillerson plans to visit Mexico, after meeting Mexican foreign minister Luis Videgaray in Washington on 8 February. The trip could be the former ExxonMobil chief executive's first in his new role. Tillerson wants to work "on the essential relationship between our two countries", he says. The US and Mexico will cooperate to find solutions to their existing "clear and public" differences, Videgaray says. US defence secretary James Mattis has also reached out to his Mexican counterparts, praising Mexico's "growing leadership in the region" and promising to strengthen bilateral relations.
