NEW REGISTRATION SCHEME FOR ENGINEERS MAKES JERSEY'S STRUCTURAL DESIGN PROCES SAFER AND MORE EFFICIENT

From 1 January 2008, only engineers registered as Approved Certifiers of Design (Building Structures) will be able to certify the structural design of buildings in Jersey. This new system will streamline Jersey's construction process by reducing certification time, and make it safer by ensuring approved certifiers meet strict criteria. Structural Engineers Registration Ltd (SER) has been appointed to administer and manage the registration scheme on behalf of Jersey's Planning and Environment Department (PED). SER is a joint initiative of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), and has been driven by changes to the Jersey Building Bye-laws aimed at simplifying the building application process. The scheme follows on from the successful registration scheme currently running in Scotland which was set up in 2005.
