Durian shell-based chemically treated and activated mesoporous-activated carbon had been successfully prepared by chemical activation using phosphoric acid (H3PO4) as an activating agent. The as-prepared activated carbon was systematically characterised by various techniques which include thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, and X-ray diffraction. Subsequently, the activated carbon was used as electrode active material in electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) together with an aqueous neutral electrolyte. A specific capacitance of 120 mF cm(-2) or equivalent to single electrode specific capacitance of 93.1 F g(-1) was achieved. The energy density and power density were recorded at values of 11.3 Wh kg(-1) and 170 kW kg(-1), respectively, for the performance of the single electrode capacitance.
