Shell, Repsol Find Algeria Gas

Royal Dutch Shell has discovered gas in the Zerafa perimeter of Algeria's Gourara Basin with Algerian state Sonatrach and the UAE's Liwa Energy, Sonatrach says. Tests of the DSA-1 well, drilled to a depth of 2,358 meters, showed gas flowing at a rate of 5,309 cubic meters per hour. Shell's Zerafa acreage lies in Blocks 345, 346 and 322b in the southwest. The Anglo-Dutch supermajor drilled its first well there in 2007, but did not disclose results. Shell acquired both Zerafa and the Reggane Djebel Hirane Block in Algeria's Reggane Basin in a 2005 licensing round, but in 2008 ceded 20% stakes in both to Liwa (IOD Apr.1'08,p2).
