China plans to help the country's green automobile industry by boosting demand for alternative-fuel vehicles. The government will offer subsidies to buy hybrid and energy-efficient vehicles for use in the public sector in 13 cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, the official Xinhua news agency said. The authorities will offer a "one-off subsidy for the purchase of mixed-power, electric and fuel-cell vehicles," the agency reported, citing a joint statement from the ministries of finance and science and technology. "The statement said the subsidy will be decided by the gap between the prices of energy-efficient vehicles and automobiles powered by traditional fuel," Xinhua said.
