Gazprom, which recently announced plans to become a major player in the Russian electricity market, said Wednesday that it will almost triple its electricity sales to over 500 billion rubles ($16 billion) a year by 2015. The Russian gas giant earned 200 billion rubles last year through selling 180 billion kWh of electricity, Gazprom executive board member Kirill Seleznev said. He added that Gazprom's new power arm, Gazprom Energoholding (formerly Gazoenergeticheskaya) plans to boost the capacity of its national and regional generating and wholesale marketing companies by 5.64 GW (IOD Aug.25,p2). The program includes the construction of new facilities near the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi, which is hosting the winter Olympic and Paralympic games in 2014, he said.
