Pakistan’s Supreme Court has reportedly asked the government to reissue a tender for LNG imports for the Mashal LNG project. This comes after the government allegedly ignored the lowest bid for the imports, prompting judicial authorities to investigate the tender process (IOD Apr.29,p7). The move may potentially delay first LNG shipments into Pakistan by a year, and could leave the government paying more. “The reopening of the process will result not only in loss of time but the favorable LNG prices locked in under the existing deal are unlikely to be secured again. That will mean massive gas and energy shortages at least for four to five years,” a senior government official was quoted as saying by Dawn newspaper.
