There have been two approaches for reducing the number of spermatozoa per service - reducing the number of spermatozoa per insemination dose or reducing the number of inseminations per service. If sows are inseminated surgically at the utero-tubular junction, doses of spermatozoa as low as 1.5 x 10~8 can be used, whereas inseminations in which a conventional approach is used require 20 times more spermatozoa (3 x 10~9).
