RWE has officially opened its 90 megawatt Rhyl Flats offshore wind farm in the UK, built in just 14 months and now the largest renewable energy plant in Wales. The company has run the nearby 60 MW North Hoyle wind farm since 2004. German RWE and UK supplier firm Scottish & Southern Energy are equal 50% partners in the Greater Gabbard wind farm offshore Suffolk, which, upon scheduled completion in 2011, will have 500 MW - it is the world's largest offshore wind farm under construction (IOD Feb.18,p8). RWE said it invests around ?1 billion ($1.5 billion) annually in European new renewable projects, 70% of it in wind. Separately, the government on Wednesday published plans to require all UK homes by 2020 to be fitted with "smart meters" by their power suppliers. It also released a paper setting out the case for developing smart grids in the UK.
