Woodside Petroleum and a venture between Royal Dutch Shell and Chevron won exploration permits in a deepwater frontier area off northwestern Australia, which the government said offers the potential for new plays. Woodside beat two rival bidders to take 100% of the WA-434-P permit in the Exmouth plateau region of the far west Carnarvon Basin, about 200 km west of Chevron's large Gorgon gas field, pledging A$121.5 million (US$107 million) of work, including seismic and four wells within three years.
