Partners in Australia's North West Shelf LNG project are suing the federal government to recover condensate tax revenues they claim were incorrectly levied. Newspaper The Australian reported that the venture has started litigation in Australia's Federal Court and could be seeking over US$430 million in refunds. Woodside is operator of the project, alongside BHP Billiton, BP, Chevron, Royal Dutch Shell, China National Offshore Oil Corp. and Japan Australia LNG. The firms argue that the Rankin Trend comprises a number of fields rather than just one field, as Australia's taxation office contends. BHP said in its annual report last week that the lawsuit is seeking rulings that recently enacted excise by-laws have incorrectly defined the relevant fields, and is looking to recover US$72 million.
