Qatar has joined a World Bank-led organization committed to reducing gas flaring, the bank says. The small Opec producer officially joined the Global Gas Flaring Reduction (GGFR) partnership in Doha over the weekend. GGFR officials had expected Qatar to sign early last year, after becoming the first Mideast country to be awarded a Kyoto-compliant carbon credit scheme for reducing gas flaring at its Al-Shaheen oil field in 2007 (IOD Jun.1'07p6). No explanation was given for the delay.
