Pemex to Boost Drilling in Hopes of Stemming Output Decline

In a bid to stabilize falling oil production, Mexico's state energy firm Pemex is bringing in additional rigs to drill the onshore Chicontepec field this year. It also plans to drill a third well in deep waters in the Gulf of Mexico, upstream director Carlos Morales Gil said Monday. Mexico's crude oil production fell to 2.667 million barrels per day during the first quarter of 2009, a drop of almost 8% compared to the same quarter of last year. Pemex posted a net loss of 27 billion pesos [$1.9 billion] in the first quarter, due largely to the slump in crude production and lower oil prices.
