The present study involves the modification of the cutting tool insert for supplying liquid nitrogen to the heat generation zones in the turning process. In the present investigation, the chip morphology and tool wear of the PVD TiAlN coated tungsten carbide cutting tool inserts of ISO CNMG 120408 MP1 - KC5010 in the turning of Ti-6Al-4V alloy have been studied, under wet and cryogenic cooling environments. A substantial reduction in tool wear was obtained under cryogenic cooling compared to wet machining. Small sized serrated teeth were formed in cryogenic cooling over wet machining. Cryogenic cooling provided substantial benefits in reducing tool wear and decreasing serrated teeth, through control of the cutting zone temperature by applying liquid nitrogen to the heat generation zones, through modified cutting tool inserts.
