Who should get SMA carrier screening?

The debate over universal carrier screening for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) continues-and recent research contributes little toward settling it. Major specialty societies have conflicting views on universal SMA screening. While the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG) supports it, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) in May 2009 recommended against such screening, citing a lack of pilot studies on cost-effectiveness, best practices for pretest and post-test education on screening, and patient preferences.
