In Memoriam: Charles J. Epstein

The world of medical genetics is a different place. We lost Charlie Epstein. I say "we" because Charles J. Epstein, MD, belonged to us all - not just those of us who were fortunate enough to train with him - but to all of us, especially those on this side of the Atlantic Ocean and particularly those with Down syndrome. A leader of North American medical genetics at a transformative time, Charlie served as President of the American Society of Human Genetics, the American Board of Medical Genetics, and the American College of Medical Genetics in an era when compassionate and eloquent leadership was needed. Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Human Genetics at a defining period in human and medical genetics - the 1980s - Charlie changed the nature of our Society's flagship publication. A famous target of the infamous Unabomber, he never became a victim and instead gave the rest of us unparalleled clarity and understanding of a meaningless and brutal event. ^e>john.carey@hsc.utah.edu
