At the recent European Association of Palliative Care (EAPC) conference in Vienna, Catherine Walshe stated: 'Nurses and nursing as a profession are keen to highlight their contribution to the care of patients in the palliative phase of illness' (Walshe, 2009: 33). Yet are we as palliative nurses good at doing this?Various authors have attempted to define the contribution made by the nurse within the palliative care context (Heslin and Bramwell 1989; Degner et al 1991; De Vlieger et al, 2004). It is suggested by Davies and Oberle (1990) that the nurse's role in palliative care is valuing, connecting, empowering, doing for, finding meaning and preserving own integrity. More recently, Becker (2009) explored the skills needed to provide high-quality end-of-life care and highlighted communication, teamwork, physical care, life closure, psychosocial and intrapersonal skills.
