Health and safety professionals in Canada are currently facing the implications of the Mclntyre Powder scandal, the hard-to-believe story of how workers were deliberately dosed with respirable aluminium dust in the belief that it was a prophylactic against the harmful effects of silica dust exposure. The programme, where workers breathed the dust dispensed via compressed air in special chambers, operated from 1943 to as recently as the late 1970s.
