On the other hand, microvascular disease is present in arterial hypertension, it coexists with the damage of the large vessels and it can be evaluated with several methods including fundoscopy. Microvascular changes of the retina are not just markers of hypertensive microvascular disease but also prognosticators of cardiovascular risk, since they are associated with increased risk for incident cardiovascular disease and future events [2]. According to the ESC guidelines [3] for the management of arterial hypertension, alterations of the fundus are considered target organ damage in hypertension. In the current study, we sought to investigate the association of the fundoscopic results with the echocardiographic and ABPM results, in a population with essential hypertension.
