Measurement of Tempering Stresses in Axisymmetric Glass Articles

The paper describes application of integrated phoioelasticity for the tempering stress measurement in axisymmetric glass articles. Basic relationships used by interpretation of the measurement results and by separation of the stress components are presented. An automatic polariscope for photoelastic measurements is described. Peculiarities of stress measurement in case of high, medium, and low birefringence are considered. It is shown how deviations of the stress distribution from the axisymmetric one can be measured. Several examples illustrate practical application of the measurement technology.
