Any skin-care regimen, including those that protect the skin, should be effective, readily available, patient friendly and constitute an integral part of patient care. Strategies to avoid skin damage should be employed throughout all episodes of patient care.Skin stripping is uncomfortable for the patient and, at worst, can be very painful. If repeated as a result of the application of products with aggressive adhesives, it can increase the wound size and remove the stratum corneum. This will adversely affect the skin's barrier function, in turn increasing transepidermal water loss (TEWL). In addition, excoriation of the skin from contact with wound-fluid proteases will delay healing, requiring more nursing interventions and adversely affecting the patient's quality of life. Skin damage may also result from incontinence and occur around stoma sites. A number of skin barrier products are available to avoid such outcomes.
